In light of anti-immigrant legislation being proposed across the country by many states, Rogelio Gutierrez, in collaboration with Lizeth Quinones of Democracy Plaza and Dr. Ian McIntosh, IUPUI Director of International Partnerships, hosted a series of events, Invisible Frontier, on the campus of IUPUI in November and December of 2010. Invisible Frontier consisted of an art installation, social intervention (screenprinted T-shirt giveaway in exchange for a recorded interview on thoughts of the installation), and symposium addressing issues faced by immigrant populations today. Artist Rogelio Gutierrez created and presented an installation of 40 “street signs” in the tunnel between Mexico (Cavanaugh Hall) and the United States (Campus Center) to simulate an invisible frontier shared by the two countries. The goal of the series was to highlight issues of concern regarding immigration. The events culminated with the exhibition being installed in the law atrium at Indiana University’s School of Law—Indianapolis for the Human Rights Day Event, Human Rights Defenders: Voices from the Community.
